Andrew Cowan
Andrew Cowan has worked within the arboriculture and forestry industry since 1985. He successfully completed a National Diploma in Arboriculture in 1990 and set up his own arboricultural contracting business undertaking tree pruning for residential clients.
In 1994 Andrew established the company called Tree Craft Ltd, which provided both domestic and commercial contracting, while he also started offering consultancy advice through a subsidiary business ACC-Andrew Cowan & Co. Andrew's long established interest in ecology and native flora and fauna lead to the company developing and working to a strong ecological ethos.
Andrew continues to expand his own qualifications and the companys' specialist services by undertaking numerous certified courses in arboricultural and ecological related issues. He began consulting on bats in 2001 and is currently licensed by English Nature and Countryside Council for Wales to conduct scientific work involving bats, while in 2003 Andrew successfully attained his Arboricultural Association Technical Certificate in Arboriculture.
In 2002, the continued success of the company, lead to the formation of a separate consultancy business, 'ArborEcology'. ArborEcology, as the name suggests, provides a combination of both arboricultural and ecological consultation. The company specialises in arboreal ecosystems, particularly issues relating to ancient and veteran tree management, while also concentrating on protected species such as bats.
Andrew is an active and committed member of the arboricultural profession and has written numerous articles for various national and international publications including; essentialARB, Forestry and British Timber, Total Arb, Euro Arb, Royal Forestry Society - Forestry Journal, Arboricultural Association Tree Newsletter, Tree Line, Tree Care Industry and others. He is also the author of the revised Arboricultural Association Guidance Note on Trees and Bats (2003).
In order for the business to continue to grow and remain competitive and successful within the modern arboricultural industry, 2005 saw Tree Craft Ltd merge with Aragon Tree Care. The merged company continues to trade under Tree Craft Ltd, providing environmental arboricultural services to the domestic and commercial sectors.
Andrew continues to be actively involved with and consult for both Tree Craft Ltd and ArborEcology. He is currently working towards producing an Arboricultural Practice Note, which will provide 'good working practice' guidance, setting the standard, for working on trees with consideration for bats.
